- During World War II the United States formed their first Naval Combat Demolition Teams originally working in the Mediterranean. Expansion to the Pacific theatre bought a change of designation to Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs).The UDTs' mission was to clear beach approaches of mines and any other obstacles in preparation for amphibious assualt landings. To aid the frogmen in these tasks a special waterproof watch was developed by Hamilton featuring a protective cap which screwed down to the seal in the winding crown (Text copied from the Concise Guide to Military Timepieces by Z.M. Wesolowski)
- In the 1950s, Elgin introduced a new UDT divers watch as illustrated here, which resembled the earlier Hamilton. the back of the watch is stamped U.S.N 843C whilst the dial is stamped 'Elgin' and 'USN BUSHIPS' denoting US Navy Bureau of Ships(in black and therefore only visible with a looking glass) Manual wind movement.
